For Prof. Dato’ Dr. Wan Halim, sociology has never belonged solely in universities, research centres or government offices.
Its value lies in what happens when knowledge is carried into communities.
Across decades of work, that conviction has taken him into neighbourhoods confronting interethnic tension, families navigating crisis, women rebuilding their lives, individuals recovering from addiction, young people developing civic responsibility, and communities learning how to resolve differences without allowing conflict to divide them.
The settings have changed. The purpose has not.
“Scholarship carries its greatest value when it becomes service — when research informs action, institutions remain connected to communities, and professional knowledge improves the everyday lives of people.”
More than four decades into his career, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Wan Halim continues to teach, write, advise and serve. Long after many would consider retirement, he remains engaged in advancing clinical sociology, strengthening community capacity and developing the next generation of knowledge and practice. For him, service has never been a chapter of a professional career — it is the thread connecting all of it.
